A Millwall supporter has been arrested after he tried to leave the Den with the match ball after the club’s 2-1 victory against Sheffield United.

Police in Lewisham said a 40-year-old man, who was sitting in the Dockers Stand with his son, grabbed the football when it was kicked out of play just before the full-time whistle.

He was arrested for theft after he tried to leave the ground.

The incident was revealed on the Lewisham Police Twitter account with the club said to be supporting action against the fan.
Police tweeted: “@MillwallFC are fully supporting the police course action. This sort of behaviour is not acceptable at @MillwallFC what made it worse that the man was with his young son. #unacceptable behaviour.”

Some people took to Twitter to hit out at police with the arrest described as “pathetic”.

One tweeted: “the ball was probably for his son!?!? Party poopers.”

While a woman posted: “nice souvenir for his son. Pathetic. They keep it in other sports. Do some proper work.”
