No One Person Is Bigger Than Our Football Club
By Gary Field
I know it’s a cliché but, in my opinion, and at this moment in time Cardiff City Football Club, or to be more accurate the owner Vincent Tan seems hell bent on proving that he is actually the exception that proves the rule.
With seemingly every day that passes Vincent Tan, in my opinion, finds another way to display what I can only describe as his “Narcissistic” behaviours which serve only to demonstrate his preoccupation with personal power, prestige and most concerning self-importance.
Since he decided to take a more “Hands On” approach with our club we have become, in my opinion, increasingly the “focus” of negative media publicity and with every day the problem is getting worse.
This week alone one of our players “Aron Gunnarsson” is on record as saying that Vincent Tan is an “Easy Target” for the media. When I read that my first thought was that by his own behaviour, Vincent Tan makes himself a target. How does the saying go “If you don’t want to get shot don’t raise your head above the parapet”
At a time when our Club, Owners, Managers, Team and supporters ALL need to be pulling in the same direction the guy at the top seems intent on moving all focus onto him, and of more concern, on the next stupid thing he says or does.
Today OGS had to field off one question after another at his pre match interview about VT “Bonus Offer” to our players last week and, of even greater concern to me “If our players are only concerned with money”. OGS did his very best to bring the conversation back to “Football” but with little success. In my opinion OGS, like MM before him, deserves better than that but whilst VT is involved at our club sadly I don’t believe it will. And that’s a big problem.
Starting with his ill-conceived re-brand then, this season bonusgate, then sacking IM, then appointing a nobody without a Visa to work in this country, then emailgate, then sacking MM and last week stating that whilst he is at the club we will “Never” get our traditional colours back, then “Bonusgate2”. All, in my opinion, classic examples of narcissistic behaviour with the “Never” blue whilst I’m here statement, and the complete lack of empathy that shows to the majority of our fans, myself included, who want exactly that will one day bring the chickens home to roost.
Then as Narcissus found to his cost, after spurning the feelings of “Echo”, the consequence of his actions resulted in “Nemesis”, the Greek God of revenge, tricking him into falling in love with his own reflection and ultimately committing suicide.
And that, in my opinion, is the biggest problem off ALL, VT is in love with his own reflection and the image of our club playing in RED. As a result we have become a media circus at the very time we need to be concentrating only on football.
There is hope on the horizon though, and I hope it turns out to be VT meeting his own “Nemesis” and that’s the protest during the Liverpool game. That will of course bring more media attention but, whilst VT is here it won’t go away, at least not in my opinion.
But at least it will be us, the fans, fighting for our tradition. If we win that then we will prove “Absolutely” that, NO ONE PERSON IS BIGGER THAN OUR CLUB.
And that’s a fight we must win.
